Oxygen Flow Meter

An oxygen flow meter is a medical device used to measure and regulate the flow of oxygen being delivered to a patient. It is an essential tool in oxygen therapy, helping healthcare providers deliver the right amount of oxygen to patients with respiratory issues or those requiring supplemental oxygen.

Components of an Oxygen Flow Meter
Flow Control Valve:
Allows for adjustment of the oxygen flow rate. The valve controls the rate at which oxygen is delivered to the patient.

Flow Meter Scale:
The scale shows the flow rate, usually in liters per minute (LPM). This scale can be linear or graduated to show accurate flow measurements.

Needle or Float:
In Bourdon gauge meters, a needle moves along a calibrated scale to show the oxygen flow. In Thorpe tube or rotameter flow meters, a float rises within the tube, indicating the flow rate.

Connection Port:
The flow meter has a connection port that links to the oxygen source, whether it be a tank, concentrator, or wall-mounted oxygen system.

Oxygen Delivery Outlet:
The flow meter is connected to the tubing that delivers oxygen to the patient through a mask, nasal cannula, or other devices.

Types of Oxygen Flow Meters
Bourdon Gauge Flow Meter :
Description : The Bourdon gauge flow meter uses a spring mechanism and a curved tube that straightens when the gas flows through it. The increase in flow causes the tube to straighten, which moves the needle on the gauge to indicate the flow rate.
Features:
Can be used in portable applications (with oxygen tanks).
It provides a precise reading of oxygen flow.
Applications : Ideal for use with cylinders or portable oxygen tanks.

Thorpe Tube Flow Meter :
Description : The Thorpe tube flow meter consists of a vertical tube with a float inside. As oxygen flows into the tube, the float rises to indicate the flow rate on the scale. This type of flow meter is often considered more accurate for oxygen delivery in hospital settings.
Features:
Highly accurate with a vertical scale for measurement.
Fixed flow setting for steady oxygen delivery.
Applications : Commonly used with oxygen concentrators or wall-mounted oxygen systems in hospitals.

Rotameter Flow Meter:
Description : A rotameter flow meter has a tapered tube with a float inside. As the oxygen flows through the tube, the float rises and indicates the flow rate on a scale.
Features :
Suitable for low flow oxygen applications.
Offers a simple design with an easy-to-read scale.
Applications : Often used in clinical settings or home oxygen therapy where low oxygen flow is required.
