How an Eye Vision Drum Works
Design:
The Eye Vision Drum typically consists of a rotating drum with a series of visual symbols or letters (often arranged according to the Snellen chart or Tumbling E chart). The symbols or letters are positioned at varying sizes.
Optotype Display:
The drum can be rotated or adjusted to display different optotypes or letter combinations that are used to test different levels of visual acuity. The symbols or letters decrease in size as the test progresses to determine the smallest size a patient can read.
Patient Interaction:
The patient is asked to identify the symbols or letters on the drum from a specified distance, usually standing or sitting at a fixed position. The eye doctor adjusts the drum to show different rows or sets of optotypes to assess the patient's vision at various levels of difficulty.
Measurement of Acuity:
The Snellen chart format on the drum tests distance visual acuity, and the near vision optotypes are used to check for near-sightedness or presbyopia (difficulty reading close-up objects).

Depending on the test results, the doctor may use the vision drum to assess the effects of glasses or contact lenses and further refine the prescription for corrective eyewear.

This test is meant to measure distance visual acuity, typically used for diagnosing conditions like myopia (nearsightedness) or astigmatism.
Near Vision Test:
For patients who may experience difficulty reading close-up text (typically due to presbyopia or hyperopia), the vision drum can also include near-vision optotypes. The patient is asked to read small text or letters from a shorter distance (often 14 inches or 35 cm) to evaluate near vision.
Binocular Vision Testing:
The Eye Vision Drum may be used to assess binocular vision, which refers to the ability to use both eyes together effectively. This can help detect strabismus (crossed eyes), amblyopia (lazy eye), or other vision disorders that affect eye coordination.
